The seat and capital of the county of Salt Lake, Salt Lake City is located on the Jordan River in northcentral Utah, on the southeast end of Great Salt Lake. The Mormons have their home and world capital (church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) located in Salt Lake City. The church impacts political, social, cultural and economic life of the people that live all over Utah and even states that border the area like Wyoming, Nevada and Idaho. Salt Lake City sits at the bottom of the Wasatch Range which goes up more than a mile and the elevation of Salt Lake City is around 4,300 feet. In the middle of many urbanized zones along the mountain range you will find Salt Lake city and around it you’ve got Provo to the south and to the north you’ve got Ogden.
History of Salt Lake City
The Shoshone and Ute Indians were the earliest people to inhabit the area. Salt Lake City was founded by Brigham Young in 1847 with his band of 148 Mormons. They founded the city, so they would have a place to avoid religious persecution. The city was called the Great Salt Lake City up until the year 1868. Brigham Young laid Salt Lake City out according to the plan for the city of Zion that Joseph Smith had laid out. It was disconnected into 10 acre blocks that were surrounded by extensive roads that would group around the Temple Block (the current name for this is Temple Square). Salt Lake City was referred to as the “City of the Saints” and the “New Jerusalem” for Mormon immigrants that would travel from Europe and the east. In addition to the Mormon church, the 1849 California Gold Rush added to the growth of the city.
Utah passed to United States sovereignty and was named a territory in 1850. This was after the 1848 Treat of Guadalupe Hidalgo and then Salt Lake City was named the capital of the territory from 1856 to 1896 when it became the capital of this new state. There was struggle between U.S. officials and the Mormon church which led to the start of the Utah War in 1857 and 1858. Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston took his soldiers through Salt Lake City during this so called war, to build Camp Floyd just to the west of Utah Lake. Religious and social disagreements between non Mormons and Mormons continued to impact the life of the people in Salt Lake City for over a century.
The city began to take off as a thriving center of commerce in the West. There main factors in this included the mines being opened for work in the 1860’s and the connection of the Union of the Union Pacific at Ogden with Salt Lake City by way of the 1870 completion of the Utah Central Railroad. Since the beginning of the 20th century, Salt Lake City’s population has spiked and continued to rise steadily. It reached it’s high in 1960 and then began to decline. The population started growing once more in the 70’s and by the early part of the 21st century, Salt Lake City had achieved the same number of residents that they had at their peak in 1960. Salt Lake City played host to the Olympic Winter games in 2002.
Salt Lake City: The Contemporary City
Salt Lake City mining operations produce platinum, silver, gold, copper, molybdenum, various salts and zinc. Salt Lake City is a regional transportation and trade center and additionally, has an international airport. Things like health care, education, government, business and financial services are the lifeblood of the local economy. In addition, telecommunications and higher technology are main factors as well. Buildings and monuments inside the Temple square include the Seagull monuments of 1913, the Mormon Tabernacle from 1863 to 1875 and the Salt Lake Temple. If you go near the middle of the city you’ll find Lion and Beehive houses which were the homes of the family members of Brigham Young, and you’ll find Young’s grave as well. There is an exhibition hall built inside of the State Capital and it is made of marble and Utah granite in the Corinthian style.
If you are looking for a sports experience, Salt Lake City is home to the Utah Jazz who play in basketball in the NBA. On the other hand, if you are looking for something a bit more cultured you can find that at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, the state opera and symphony orchestra, the Utah Museum of Natural History and a children’s museum. If you are into birds, you can find those at the Tracy Aviary which is home to over 135 species of different birds. If you are in the mood for a little Shakespeare, June through October offers the Utah Shakespearean Festival. Finally, if you are looking for state parks and nature, you are in the mecca. Salt Lake City offers several state parks including the Wasatch National Forest that connects the city on the north and east sides. Founded in 1862, you’ve got Fort Douglas residing on the outskirts of the city.
