The Bay Area includes many cities around the San Francisco Bay. This is an extensive metropolitan region and is geographically diverse that is home to over 7 million people. The cities generally associated with the Bay Area include San Jose, Oakland and of course, San Francisco. This area was once the focus of Gold Rush prospectors and Spanish Missions and is best known for the high-tech industry, liberal politics and lifestyle.

While the Bay Area doesn’t have any boundaries that can be considered firm, the Bay Area includes parts of nine different counties including Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Solano, Sonoma and Napa. The northern part of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties are the major par of the Peninsula while Alameda and Contra Costa counties cover the Bay Area’s East Bay. The southern sections of Napa and Sonoma counties are said to be part of this area since the economies and cultures are Bay Area facing. To the South and East, whether bordering towns like Santa Cruz and Gilroy are part of what is considered the Central Valley or Bay area is going to depend on who you ask.
